Acht grote satellietfoto’s laten vuilnisbelten van elektronisch afval zien. Noud Sleumer onderzocht wat er gebeurt met de 40 tot 50 miljoen elektronisch afval die er jaarlijks wordt geproduceerd. 20 procent wordt gerecycled of weggegooid zoals zou moeten; het overige deel wordt onderdeel van een illegale, wereldwijde handel.

E-waste kan dankzij een maas in de wet als tweedehands, bruikbaar goed worden gelabeld. Problematisch afval wordt zo vanuit het ene land probleemloos geëxporteerd, om vervolgens in een ander land als afval geïmporteerd te worden. Rondom dit informele systeem ontstaat een infrastructuur van banen, producten en diensten.

Grafisch ontwerper Onno Blase verzamelde scheve palen van 2011 tot 2020. Door de camera zo te draaien dat de paal loodrecht in beeld komt, ontstaat een boeiend lijnenspel. De serie telt inmiddels meer dan veertienhonderd foto’s.

Kenny lives with agoraphobia, an anxiety condition that causes individuals to avoid venturing into crowded or remote places, for fear of having a panic attack and being unable to escape or find help. For some, at its worst, this can mean a fear of leaving home. To counter this, Kenny roams the globe via Google Street View, and virtually combs streets and landscapes to snap screenshots for her photography series “Agoraphobic Traveller.”

In some 26,000 screenshots and counting, she’s caught unsuspecting subjects—from a young couple kissing on a curb in Chile to three camels crossing an empty highway in United Arab Emirates—through her unlikely lens.

It all started in Art School, which I, however, didn’t finish. Instead I chose to work in the ‘real’ world of applied arts and design.

First for third parties, soon followed by the creation of my own clothing labels and even a concept store.

What I had learned on my journey in the world of design I could pass on to others through teaching.

My passion to go where no one has gone before brought me to faraway places, which I have captured in millions of pictures.

Pictures of my travels were featured in magazines.

But it was only when I stopped looking outside myself, and when I tapped into the field of not-knowing,

that I realized that the reason for being and change does not come from the outside, but from within myself.

How the @subwayhands project tenderly documented pre-pandemic life

As the New York-based Instagram project goes into hiatus, Hannah La Follette Ryan reflects on her work and its future.

When Hannah La Follette Ryan first moved to New York, she developed what she describes as an “anthropological interest” in its inhabitants. Her commute between Brooklyn and Manhattan, where she worked as a nanny, meant that she spent a large amount of time travelling by public transport. “Riding the subway leaves this indelible impression on a person,” she says. “It’s a very polarising, shared experience.”

Soon after her move, Hannah started an Instagram account where she posted anonymous photos of people’s hands on the subway: @subwayhands has hands clutching onto a handbag, curled on top of a glittery skirt, a smaller palm wrapped tightly into a larger one. “It’s confirmed my suspicions that hands can give away as much as faces,” says the photographer. The images, despite how little they tell the viewer about the person the hands belong to, are strikingly intimate.

‘You have many talents’ a palm reader once told me. ‘And that can make it very difficult for you.’

It is only after years of exploring my many talents in the outside world, that I understand the advantage and challenges that come with this gift.

My journey of self-exploration, finding my unique reason to be, took me around the world and kept me busy in mind and matter for a long time.

Visualizing changing landscapes with
Google Earth Engine

Earth’s landscapes are constantly changing.

Ephemeral seasonal cycles blanket landscapes in snow, paint hillsides with colorful wildflowers, and dress trees in green. Longer-lasting change is happening too. Forest harvesting and wildfires alter vegetation composition, urban development paves over nature, and erosion sculpts the land. Earth-observing satellites have been a witness to these changes.

Now Google Earth Engine is making it easy to convert the image data into time lapse animations that capture the dynamism of nature and humans

In this follow-up to a previous post introducing basic animation techniques in Earth Engine, I’ll use a section of Peru’s wildly dynamic Ucayali River to demonstrate more advanced animation techniques that emphasize change by imprinting historical context into each frame of the animation using fading and cumulative history effects. A river animation app is provided, so if coding is not your thing, feel free to skip to the end.

The exhibition will zoom both in and out, as each of the selected images tells its own unique story about the state of the planet — from scattered island communities to massive metropolises and huge agricultural settlements.

visitors will enter a dark room with photos, which illuminate onto the floor. the evolution over the course of time will be visualized through the display of the same subject at various moments in time, each accompanied by otherwise little-known facts and thought-provoking philosophy.

‘visitors to the exhibition will be thrilled and amazed by the earth’s diversity, but at the same time reminded that the earth’s resources are not infinite, and that we have a joint obligation to look after what we have.’

Ik ben gefascineerd door luchten, iedereen kan het bewonderen, maar pas als je er langer naar kijkt zie je hoe bijzonder het eigenlijk is. Vandaar dat ik op google maps naar boven ging kijken inplaats van naar beneden. Helaas bewegen de beelden van google natuurlijk niet, maar heeft de camera het op een willekeurig moment vast gelegd.

Hier onder zie je mijn collectie van luchten, niet willekeurig vast gelegd.

De Annex: Basel Abbas en Ruanne Abou-Rahme

Het kunstenaarsduo Basel Abbas (Cyprus, 1983) en Ruanne Abou-Rahme (Verenigde Staten, 1983) groeide op in Ramallah, een Palestijnse stad op de Westelijke Jordaanoever.

In hun werk stellen zij de constante politieke en sociale onrust in hun thuisland centraal. Met video, teksten, archiefmateriaal, objecten, zang en performance creëren zij hartverscheurende, zintuiglijke installaties. Speciaal voor De Annex bij De ommuurde stad maakten zij een nieuwe video-installatie, waarin ze op een gelaagde manier invoelbaar maken dat muren en grenzen vergaande gevolgen hebben, voor een land, een volk, en de individuele psyche.

De Annex is er voor hedendaagse kunst. Op een vaste plek in het tentoonstellingsgebouw De Stallen – de laatste zaal – geeft het Centraal Museum hedendaagse kunstenaars het podium om een andere kijk te geven op het thema van de tentoonstelling in de voorgaande zalen.
